Alta Vista Alta Vista claims to index 150 million Web pages. There are both simple and advanced search forms. The advanced search may be used to do Boolean searching or to search by date. Alta Vista offers a number of options for searching so read the help pages for the best results.

Ask Jeeves

Ask Jeeves!

Ask Jeeves a question in plain English and you will receive a reply from either Jeeves' list of human selected sites or from a metasearch of several of the major search engines. There is also Ask Jeeves for Kids. Jeeves is a fun place to visit, but lacks the relevance and precision needed by the serious searcher.

Chubba

Chubba submits searches to WhatUSeek, Yahoo, Alta Vista, Excite, Infoseek, Hot Bot, and Lycos. Results may be returned either grouped by search engine or combined. You may not specify which search engines are to be used. Chubba is operated by WhatUSeek

Cyber411

Submit your search to up to 16 search engines at the same time. You specify which search engines are used. The results are listed by engine.

Debriefing

Debriefing searches Alta Vista, Hot Bot, Yahoo, Infoseek, Excite, Webcrawler, and Lycos. Results are ranked by relevence, duplicates are eliminated. Debriefing works smoothly and efficiently. Use the advance search option to control the amount of time of the search.

DigiSearch

You specify which of 18 search engines is to be used for the search, and the amount of time to be spent on the search. It is also possible to search Usenet news groups, and people and business directories. The results from each search site are presented separately.

Direct Hit Direct Hit analyses the results of previous searches on a search term and brings you the sites which people have chosen most often from the list of search results for that term. Direct Hit is not an independent search engine but is a partner with sites such as Hot Bot, ZD Net and America Online.

Dogpile

Search the web, usenet newsgroups, FTP sites, business news, stock quotes, weather and newswires. Results are returned rapidly, but are not combined. Their Metafind uses six search engines (web pages only) and combines the search results and sorts them by search engine, domain, alphabetically, or by keyword.

excite Netsearch Indexes 55 million web pages. Enter search terms as words or phrases and Excite's Search Wizard will suggest other possibly relevant search terms. Searches may be refined by the use of + and -, and by the use of Boolean operators. Results may include not only web pages but news, Excite directory sites, and other related web sites. There is also a Power Search which will help you to narrow your search and specify how the results are displayed.
Fast Search This is a new search engine by FAST and Dell Computers. Fast Search claims to search 80 million web pages.
Google The order of the results list returned on a Google search is based on a complicated formula relating to the number of pages linked to the page in question. The pages with the most links from the most important sites are given top priority on the list. Google still seems to be a beta version and it is best to read the help directions to determine how to search and how to understand the results list. Click on More Google to find help.
Goto.Com
Page owners pay for the top listings on Goto's search results. Search here to find out who will pay for top search positions on specific keywords. Paid sites are listed first in the search results. Inktomi search engines are used to provide the other, unpaid sites.

Highway 61 MetaCrawler

Submit your search to 5 search engines (Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek, Web Crawler, and Excite). References are listed on the search results page in order of relevance, and the search engine from which the reference was retrieved is indicated. There are Boolean AND and OR search options. The amount of time spent on the search can be specified, and there are two options for the number of references retrieved. These folks have a sense of humor too which is nice to see in a search site.

HotBot HotBot claims to have indexed every word of 110 million documents. The expert option allows searches by date, media type, language and by location. Uses Inktomi search engines.
iAtlas At the iAtlas site, you can select your own criteria for filtering your search results using such criteria as geographic location, business, media, site size or modification date. This site uses Inktomi search engines.

Inference Find

Inference Find submits searches in parallel to Web Crawler,Alta Vista, Yahoo, Lycos, InfoSeek, and Excite. The search results are merged, the duplicates are removed, and the results are arranged into groups of similar subjects.

Infoseek Indexes 45 million web pages. Infoseek offers both simple and advanced searches. Results list of the simple search includes both web sites and links to Infoseek directory sites. Search results list may be narrowed by using the "search within results" option, or sorted by date. GOguardian is a filtering option available if you register with the Go Network.

InfoSpace

This site calls itself "the most comprehensive directory on the Internet." It provides access to several directories: telephone, toll-free, fax, business/government, yellow pages and blue pages.

Inktomi This is not a search site. Inktomi search engines are used by several of the major search sites listed on this page. This link is provided for those who are curious about Inktomi.
Lycos Indexes 50 million web pages. Lycos has both simple and advanced search options. The search results list may be narrowed by using the "search these results" option. Searches may be filtered using the SearchGuard option.
Magellan The Magellan search engine searches two types of Web sites - rated and unrated. The rated sites have been reviewed and rated for "depth, ease of exploration, and net appeal". In addition, a green light at a rated site indicates that it contains no content intended for mature audiences. If you have nothing better to do with your time, you can use the Search Voyeur to see what real time searches are being performed on Magellan. I personally observed that a number of people could not spell.

Mama : The Mother of All Search Engines

The basic metasearch uses 7 search engines to search web sites, news, usenet, stock quotes, MP3 files, images, and sounds. The results are combined and duplicates eliminated. The power search option allows you to specify the search engines used and other options such as the time spent on the search.

MetaCrawler

MetaCrawler uses 7 search engines and the results of all the search engines are combined. You may not specify which search engines are used. Metacrawler offers metasearches of specialized engines and directories through its channels. You may use MetaSpy to see the search terms that other people are searching for - if you have nothing better to do with your life.

MSN Search Estimated to search 40 million web pages. There are both simple and advanced searches. The advanced search offers several features for narrowing searches such as language, place of origin, domain, and date modified. MSN uses Inktomi search engines.

Multimeta

Metasearch site for German and American search engines. Search in either English or German.

Northern Light Indexes 129 million web pages. Search both world wide pages and special collections of magazines and other materials (you must pay for some of these). Results are organized into folders based on subject. With the power search option, you may search by date or by source.
PlanetSearch Planet Search has limited search options, and they don't release the number of sites indexed . However, the relevance rating is very easy to understand, and date each web site was indexed is included in the results list. It's also possible to preview the web sites in the results list before actually visiting them. The Find Similar option works very well, and you can see the search terms that Planet Search used which may give you additional ideas.

ProFusion

You can choose to submit your search to from one to nine search engines, or let Profusion pick the 3 best search engines to fit your terms. Results can be displayed with or without summaries. Results are combined and duplicates are eliminated. From the University of Kansas.

SavvySearch

A simultaneous search engine with the most complete net coverage so far. It includes e-mail addressees, Usenet, FTP sites, Gopher and Web space. SavvySearch queries the following search engines: AliWeb, CSTR, Deja News, EINET Galaxy, FTPSearch95, Infoseek, Inktomi, Internet Movie Database, Lycos, NIKOS, Open Text, Pathfinder, Point Search, SIFT - Stanford Information Filtering Tool, Tribal Voice, Virtual Software Library, WebCrawler, Yahoo and Yellow Pages. It will add: Magellan: McKinley's Internet Directory, Excite and shareware.com

Searchopolis This is a filtered search engine aimed at the K-12 user. Filtering by N2H2. Powered by Inktomi.
Snap Estimated to index 100 million web pages. NBCI has both simple and advanced search options. Use the advanced search option to search by media type, date, or language. Uses Inktomi search engines.
Web Crawler Indexes 2 million web pages. Web Crawler is a spider-based proxy search that supports the use of "+" and "_" and boolean searching. Results may be displayed as either titles or summaries.
YAHOO! Yahoo! is a directory, not a search engine, and web pages are indexed manually. However it contains the most complete subject index on the Web.
